Well Dweller gates progress with movement, not keys. When a route refuses to open, the answer is almost always an ability you have not earned yet rather than a hidden switch - which is why knowing the ability list saves a lot of pointless backtracking.
This page lists what each ability does and, where a source states it, where it comes from. Effects are quoted from in-game descriptions collected in the published database.
Movement abilities
| Ability | Effect | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Slingshot | Hold and release to launch the matchstick; jump off it for extra height | Ability egg inside Hunter's Cabin |
| Climb | Hold jump against a wall to cling and climb; drains a stamina meter that refills on solid ground | Ability egg after defeating The Swarm |
| Wall Sling | Stick the matchstick into a wall while climbing | Defeat the Dollmaker, then head west to the ability egg (Dollmaker's House) |
| Endless Climb | Removes the climbing stamina limit for upward walls | Barge, after defeating The Colony at the bottom of The Deep |
| Wind Ride | Hold jump while standing in a wind draft to ride upward; only works inside a draft | Wind draft room in The Drains |
| Hover | Hold jump while mid-air to hover temporarily | Ability egg in the Desiccated Castle |
| Soar | Slam the ground, then immediately hold jump to soar | Post-credits route inside Queen's Castle |
| Water Vessel access | Unlocks water vessels parked along the docks | The Docks area (Into the Deep achievement) |
| Torpedo | Shoot torpedoes from your water vessel | The Depths: after water vessel access, descend and head east to the ability pickup |
Utility and economy abilities
| Ability | Effect | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tent Travel | Select any discovered safe tent from the map | Night Garden tent, after unlocking Climb |
| Golden Gate Key | Allows you to pass golden gates | Whisper's Hut - speak with Whisper after Endless Climb and reaching Autumn Forest; it opens the gates on the routes to Looter's four scattered parts |
| The Queen's Coin | All purchases inside your save tent are significantly discounted | Post-credits: back in Queen's Castle, Lutter points to a sealed room - reach the lever above it to open the route containing the Coin |
What each one actually changes
- Slingshot is not a double jump. It gives you a second jump point that you have to place, so it fails in tight vertical shafts. Some early walls stay too high even after you have it - that is intentional.
- Climb is the mid-game pivot. Once you have it, the Bog and Night Garden open up, and returning to the Night Garden tent unlocks Tent Travel on the way.
- Wind Ride needs a draft. Leaving the current ends the lift, so treat drafts as elevators rather than flight.
- Soar is the cleanup tool. Because it arrives after the credits, any completion run is dramatically faster if you finish the story first - see Well Dweller endings and the true ending route.
- The Queen's Coin is an economy upgrade, not a movement one. If you are chasing Fully Stocked (every trinket upgraded), a tent discount changes how much farming you need - see Well Dweller trinket database: all 32 effects and slots.
Practical consequences
| If you are stuck here | The ability you are probably missing |
|---|---|
| High ledges in Night Garden after the Groundskeeper | Slingshot, then Climb |
| Tall shafts in The Bog | Climb |
| Vertical rooms in The Drains | Wind Ride (drafts), Climb for walls |
| A pit in The Drains that looks crossable | None - the geometry does not allow it with current tools |
| The five post-credits Spirit Fragment objectives | Soar |
The water vessel chain
Three entries above form one progression chain, and the order matters:
- Water Vessel access - Barge promotes Glimmer to assistant captain at The Docks (achievement: Into the Deep).
- Torpedo - descend into The Depths with the vessel and head east to the pickup. Torpedoes let the vessel break walls and destroy enemies.
- Endless Climb - use torpedoes to clear the obstruction on the Colony route, work through the levers, defeat The Colony at the bottom, and Barge rewards Endless Climb.
If you are stuck underwater, the usual answer is that you have the vessel but not the Torpedo yet.
Notes on coverage
Every ability on this page now has a documented acquisition route. What is still missing is the fight mechanics of the bosses that guard them, which belong on the boss pages instead.
