Well Dweller gates progress with three groups of counted items, and they behave differently: the seven Golden Feathers open Queen's Castle, the three Elevator Parts start a lift in The Drains, and the twenty-three story pages fill three books that each carry an achievement.
All three are covered here together, because the question behind them is always the same one - what is my counter still missing, and where does that item come from?
Golden Feathers: all 7 sources
Golden Feathers are not scattered pickups. All seven come from events - beating or winning over someone, completing a story beat, or finishing a location's objective. That matters because it explains the two most common stuck states in the game: a counter sitting at 5/7 with no obvious room left to search, and a castle gate that simply will not open.
Queen's Castle checks one number: 7/7. Nothing else about your save matters at that gate.
The seven sources
| # | Feather event | Area | What counts as done | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lady of the Drains | The Drains | Defeat her after repairing the elevator | Confirmed |
| 2 | Shrine of the Seven Sons | Midnight Drench | Take the upper route at the split, then enter the shrine marked with the seven-sons inscription and defeat it | Confirmed |
| 3 | Starsinger | The Lookout Tower | Defeat the Starsinger | Confirmed |
| 4 | Rebuilding Looter | Late game, after Looter is damaged | Put Looter back together (achievement: Stitched Up) | Confirmed |
| 5 | Squinton's birthday party | Unconfirmed area | Finish the party sequence | Reported |
| 6 | Forest King | Autumn Forest | Win over the Forest King (achievement: Fancy Feast) | Confirmed |
| 7 | Webdrench Inn | Webdrench Inn | Escape Webdrench Inn (achievement: Late Night Guest) | Confirmed |
One caveat on naming: at least one guide spells the fourth source "Lutter", while the achievement list calls the same character Looter. We use the achievement-list spelling because it is the one tied to an unlockable.
Why the counter stops at 5/7 or 6/7
Events worth re-checking, in the order that saves the most time:
- Did the fight actually end? Shrine of the Seven Sons and the Starsinger award their Feather on defeat, not on entering the room. If you left, routed around, or died during the sequence, the counter never moved.
- Winning over is not the same as killing. The Forest King is explicitly a "win over" objective, and its achievement name (Fancy Feast) matches that framing. A fight you abandoned mid-way leaves the Feather unclaimed.
- Escapes count. Webdrench Inn's Feather comes from the escape sequence, so an area you "already visited" can still owe you a Feather.
- Story-adjacent events hide behind other objectives. Rebuilding Looter is tied to the Looter repair line, which sits behind earlier family and NPC progress.
- Check the castle gate last. Reaching the entrance early is normal. The guard checks the total and nothing else, so a closed gate is a Feather problem, not a map problem.
If the counter reads 7/7 and the gate still refuses to open, that is a different bug class - report it rather than farming Feathers you already own.
Do you need Feathers for anything else?
No. Feathers are not Trinkets, not Slots and not Spirits: they do not count toward the 32-Trinket / 50-Slot / 20-Spirit completion totals, and the only hard gate they unlock is the castle entrance.
Once you are past the gate, the next blocker class is the completion counters - see Well Dweller 100% checklist and missing collectibles.
Elevator Parts: all 3 locations
The broken elevator in The Drains is the second hard counter in Well Dweller after the Golden Feathers. It will not move until the counter reads 3/3, and every part is inside The Drains itself - you are not expected to leave the region, just to open more of it.
Where the three parts are
| # | Location | How you reach it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Upper Drains route | Open with Wind Ride - look for the elevated paths rather than the floor | Source-linked |
| 2 | Second upper Drains route | Same vertical layer as the first, different branch | Source-linked |
| 3 | Far-left lower path | The end of the long lower route, not a side room off the elevator | Source-linked |
The practical order is top-down: take the two elevated parts first while Wind Ride is fresh in your hands, then commit to the long lower path. Trying to grab the far-left part first usually sends you past the elevator with a counter still reading 1/3 or 2/3, which is the exact state players report as "the lift is broken".
Why the elevator still refuses to move
- Stuck at 2/3: one of the two upper routes is still unopened. These are not hidden behind a puzzle - they are gated behind vertical movement, so if a ledge looks reachable but you cannot hold the height, you are missing a movement upgrade, not a key.
- Stuck at 0/3 or 1/3: the counter only counts parts you have physically picked up. A part you walked past on a route you later abandoned does not count toward the total.
- Counter reads 3/3 but nothing happens: leave and re-enter the elevator, then ride it down once. The lift is the trigger, not the parts.
What the repaired elevator gives you
Riding the lift down is how you reach Lady of the Drains. Beating her awards one of the seven Golden Feathers the Queen's Castle gate checks, which makes the elevator a soft prerequisite for the endgame rather than optional content.
That single Feather matters more than it looks: it is one of the seven sources listed on Well Dweller Golden Feathers: all 7 sources, and a missing Feather here is a common reason the castle gate stays shut later.
Story Pages: all 23 collectible pages
Well Dweller has six story sequences but only three of them are collectible books. Those three hold all 23 physical story pages in the game, and each book has its own achievement. The other sequences are narrative only and contain no pages - so if your page counter is stuck at 22, the missing page is in one of these three books, not in a story you have not seen yet.
The three books
| Book | Pages | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| The Witch's Bargain | 9 | The First-Born Daughter |
| The Dollmaker | 8 | The Tattered Doll |
| The Lookout Tower | 6 | Above the Kingdom |
| Total | 23 |
The second book is called The Dollmaker in-game, and its achievement is named "The Dollmaker's House" - same book, same 8 pages, which is why you will see both names in guides.
#The PAGES tab in the pause menu lists all three books with their pages, so you can see exactly which one is short without counting in-game pickups.
Where the pages are
The Witch's Bargain (9 pages)
Pages are spread across the world rather than concentrated in one biome. Published landmarks:
- a hidden Slide passage,
- a bubble/cage room that needs Slingshot,
- a bell/block puzzle,
- the upper Desiccated Castle,
- a cog and platform puzzle,
- a top-right route needing Slingshot + Climb,
- a platforming challenge,
- an eastern hidden Climb passage,
- and a left-side platform.
The Dollmaker (8 pages)
This is the most ability-hungry book:
- entered from an eastern passage,
- up an eastern hidden Climb passage,
- after the lower Dollmaker's House platforming challenge,
- in a high alcove reached with Slingshot,
- in a hidden room,
- beyond a breakable wall,
- one requiring Climb,
- and the last page requiring Wall Sling to reach the platform above.
Wall Sling is the gate here. It is obtained by defeating the Dollmaker and then heading west to collect the egg, which is why players who rush the Dollmaker fight and leave immediately end up stuck at 7/8 pages.
The Lookout Tower (6 pages)
- one in a hidden room requiring Climb,
- one above a wall reached with Climb + Slingshot,
- one reached by Slingshot then climbing,
- one approached from the left before water pulls Glimmer down,
- one atop the shaft reached by activating its moving-platform gear,
- one reached by Slingshot from the platform below.
Why this book matters for 100%
Story pages are one of the counters on Well Dweller 100% checklist: every counter and what is still missing, and the game's own completion gate requires all pages rather than a subset. Two of the three books also need late movement - Wall Sling for The Dollmaker, and Climb/Slingshot across all three - so the efficient order is to finish the story and the post-credits route first, then sweep the books with every ability available.
The in-game collectible map can mark missed items in rooms you have already visited, which is the fastest way to find a single straggler.

Still unpublished:
- Golden Feathers (7): Not yet checked on this site: the area for Squinton's birthday party, and whether any Feather event can be completed in a different order with the same result. Both are reported, not tested.
- Elevator Parts (3): Not yet checked on this site: room-by-room coordinates for each part. This page gives the route layer each part sits on; coordinates will be added only from a source we can cite, not estimated from a screenshot.
- Story Pages (23): Still missing: room-level coordinates for each page, and whether any page can be reached before its book is introduced. We publish landmarks rather than guessed coordinates.
