Well Dweller has a difficulty setting, but the settings that actually change a fight are buried under assist options - and the important detail is that they do not disable achievements. If a boss or a time trial is walling you, you are allowed to lower the wall.
Assist options (in-game, under Gameplay)
| Setting | What it does | Range |
|---|---|---|
| ATTACK STRENGTH | Your damage output | up to 200% (double) |
| DAMAGE RECIEVED | Incoming damage | down to 50% (half) |
| HEALING MECHANIC | Swaps the Oil Vial timing minigame for a simpler input | hold to heal |
| TIME TRIALS | Extra time on trial timers | up to +30 seconds |
Those are the exact in-game labels. The same menu holds the OPTIONS / STATS / PAGES / MAP tabs, and the PAGES tab is where you review story pages you have collected.
Two things make these unusually forgiving:
- They can be changed while playing, not just from a title-screen menu, so you can turn them on for one section and switch back afterwards.
- They do not affect achievements. The 41-achievement list contains no difficulty or assist condition, so a fully assisted run is not a compromised run. See Well Dweller achievements: all 41 trophies.
The healing option is worth singling out: the Oil Vial timing check is a genuine skill gate for some players, and switching it to hold-to-heal removes it completely.
How hard is the game meant to be
Well Dweller is deliberately on the gentle side for the genre, and reviewers say so plainly:
- Enemy attacks are well telegraphed with pink graphics, and enemies are not aggressive enough to swarm you outside arena fights.
- Arena battles come in two or three waves, and each offers a hitless challenge once cleared - that is how the game rewards learning a room.
- Bosses are readable rather than punishing. One reviewer who finished the campaign said he cleared nearly every boss in one or two attempts, and that mid-to-late fights are where pressure finally shows up.
- Healing is forgiving. Missing the timing window means you do not heal, but it does not consume the vial, so you can try again immediately. The assist menu can remove the timing check entirely.
If you want more pressure instead, the difficulty setting lives in the same options menu.
Combat habits that matter more than stats
- Fight from a different height. Many enemies can only attack you when you are at their level, so standing on a ledge lets you clear melee packs for free and learn attack patterns safely. Ranged enemies still target you inside aggro range, which is exactly what you want while scouting.
- Slide is an invincibility window, not just movement. Enemies generally do not re-aim an attack once it starts, so sliding through a melee enemy, ending up behind it and hitting back is a repeatable answer in boss fights too.
- Use the matchstick slingshot to scout. It is unlimited. Fire it before dropping down a level or down stairs; it routinely reveals routes and trinkets you would otherwise walk past.
- Turn the mini map on. It is off by default in settings. It shows what you have already explored, which is what you need both for navigation and for knowing where a missing collectible could still be.
- Finish explored rooms, not just the critical path. The collectible-reveal system only marks missed items inside rooms you have already entered, so unexplored rooms stay invisible to it no matter how much you spend on markers.
Where to spend early currency
| Buy this | Why |
|---|---|
| Glass Eye trinket from the base merchant | Makes hidden paths visible - without it they look like solid walls. Best early purchase for exploration |
| A second Oil Vial charge (2,000) | Doubles your healing per refill, which matters more than any damage trinket while you are learning fights |
| Trinket slots | The cheapest way to get raw stats, if you already have good trinkets to fill them |
What not to buy early: Weathered Coin looks like an economy trinket but its currency bonus is barely noticeable before upgrades, and it occupies 5 slots. The full slot and effect list is on Well Dweller trinket database: all 32 effects and slots.
If it is one specific fight
Boss-by-boss pages so far: Groundskeeper, The Swarm, Lady of the Drains, Starsinger, Forest King, Creature from the Deep and Lida the Terrible. If your problem is a locked route rather than a fight, start at Well Dweller 100% checklist: every counter and what is still missing.
