Well Dweller Save File Corrupted? Recovery Steps That Work

A Well Dweller save corruption bug hit players who paused on the same frame they saved. The developer fixed it and published recovery steps.

Well Dweller had a real save corruption bug in its first build, and the developer both fixed it and published manual recovery steps. This page is the recovery procedure, quoted from the developer's own September 26 post rather than reconstructed from player guesses.

If you have not lost a save yet, the useful part is shorter: update the game, and read the prevention section below.

What caused the Well Dweller save corruption

The September 26 patch notes open with this line:

Prevented a possible save corruption if you pause the game on the same frame that you save.

That is the whole documented cause: pausing and saving on the same frame. The developer's own framing is that it was a rare coincidence of several factors rather than something you could trigger reliably, and the fix shipped in the same update.

What this page cannot tell you: whether that bug ever affected console builds, or whether a save lost on Switch, PS5 or Xbox can be recovered at all. See the console section below.

Well Dweller save recovery steps (PC)

These four steps are the developer's, published with the patch. The save folder on Windows is:

C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\WellDweller
  1. Delete the file named Settings. This is the settings file, not your progress.
  2. Look at your save file - it is named something like WellDweller1.
    • If it is larger than 0 KB, you should be able to keep playing normally.
    • If it is 0 KB, the file is corrupt and should be deleted.
  3. Find the file named something like BACKUP_WellDweller1 and check that it is larger than 0 KB.
  4. Rename the backup to match the save you deleted - so BACKUP_WellDweller1 becomes WellDweller1.

Step 4 is the part that actually restores progress: the game reads the file by name, so a renamed backup is a valid save again.

Two things worth knowing before you start:

  • Do this with the game closed. Renaming a file the game currently holds open is how people turn a recoverable save into an unrecoverable one.
  • Copy the whole folder first. If step 4 does not work, the copy is your only remaining copy of the original files. It costs a few hundred kilobytes.

If you have no usable Well Dweller save backup

Then the save is gone, and the honest advice is to start a new one rather than keep experimenting. Two reasons it is less painful than it sounds:

  • Well Dweller's content is not missable - players have confirmed you can go back and clean up collectibles rather than restarting for them. See Well Dweller 100% checklist and missing items.
  • The game is short enough for a second run to be a normal playthrough, not a punishment. The developer's own estimate is roughly 10 to 14 hours for the main path.

Well Dweller saves on consoles

On Switch, Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox you have no file-level access to saves, so none of the steps above apply. What you get instead is whatever backup service the platform offers:

  • Switch / Switch 2: cloud saves are a Nintendo Switch Online feature rather than a per-game guarantee. Nintendo's own product page for Well Dweller does not list Save Data Cloud in its feature list, so we cannot confirm from an official source that this game backs its saves up. If it does, restoring a cloud copy replaces the local one - check the timestamp first, because a copy uploaded after the corruption is not a rescue.
  • PS5: cloud backup is part of PlayStation Plus, with USB copies as a manual alternative.
  • Xbox / Game Pass: console saves sync to the cloud automatically.

Not confirmed on this site: whether the corruption bug could trigger on console builds at all, and whether any console player reported it. The patch notes are platform-agnostic and we have not seen a console report either way. If you lost a save on a console, tell us which platform and build - that is a genuinely useful report.

Preventing another corrupted Well Dweller save

  • Update before your next long session. The fix ships in the September 26 build, so any save made after updating cannot hit the documented cause.
  • Do not spam pause into save. The trigger is the two inputs landing on the same frame, which is exactly what happens when you mash pause while the save prompt runs.
  • Keep your own copies if you are on PC. The folder holds a numbered save plus an automatic backup. Copying the folder somewhere else every few hours costs nothing and is the only protection that works across every failure mode, including ones we have not documented.

The patch notes also promise a second update with less urgent changes. Track what has shipped on Well Dweller patch notes and update history, and the platform-specific bugs on Well Dweller Switch issues, controls and patches.

Well Dweller save file FAQ

Can a corrupted Well Dweller save be recovered?

Yes, if the automatic backup survived. The game keeps a numbered save next to a BACKUP_ copy, so renaming the backup to the save file's name restores progress. If the corrupted file is 0 KB and the backup is empty too, the save is gone.

Where is the Well Dweller save file stored?

On Windows: C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\WellDweller. The folder holds a file named Settings plus your progress file, typically WellDweller1, and its BACKUP_ pair.

Does the September 26 patch fix a save that is already lost?

No. The patch prevents the bug going forward; it does not repair a file that is already corrupt. A save lost before you updated still needs the manual recovery steps above, and if neither the save nor its BACKUP_ copy holds data, that save is gone.
